I posted "Blues", the first taste of a new Loney Dear album back in January, and it seems like that was foooooooreverrrr ago. At long last, the puzzle has been completed: Hall Music comes out October 4th on Polyvinyl (pre-order here), check the track list below ("Blues" seems to be "Loney Blues" now) and download "My Heart", the newest gourmet sampling from the LP. Hey Polyvinyl, can you press Sologne on wax? That'd rule/seems like a no brainer.
1. Name 2. My heart 3. Loney Blues 4. Calm down 5. Maria, is that you 6. D major 7. Largo 8. Young hearts 9. Durmoll 10. I dreamed about you 11. What have I become?
The day has been slow with music excitement, but then everything BLEW THE FUCK UP: new Loney Dear!!
"Blues" is featured on a compilation called "Love Sic Disco", and it was compiled to celebrate 100 releases from the label Something in Construction. It can be downloaded for free right here from the Guardian....
...But don't bother: it's total shit, except for "Blues", which you can download in this post! Fuck yeah, we've got you covered!
The song itself is layered with plenty of Swedish goodness, fully realized and just damn perfect sounding. This new gem will appear on Loney Dear's follow up to "Dear John" and it's coming later this year from Polyvinyl.
Frequent contributor Matt Giordano pointed out a little while back that it was insane how this blog hasn't posted anything about Loney Dear's newest record "Dear John", which came out this past January. It's true: it's insane. I think that he's our most posted artist (or close to) and we've gushed over this music so many times. We haven't been sitting on it: I know that I've had the vinyl at my home since it's release and am really into it. Let us forgive the mistakes of the past and make nice on internal promises: here it is, at long last, the "Dear John" post.
Every review I've read has pointed out how sad this one is, and yes that's true. Your mood will drop at least 10% when giving this a spin, but hopefully your taste will be sharpened and you will notice how precious this record is. It's Loney Dear's most everything: sad, focus, cohesive and fully realized music. That doesn't matter: it's every bit as exciting and infectous as this was when you first discovered it. Don't give up on this just yet, as is the curse with early year release dates, give it a listen with fresh ears. It'll work wonders.
NOTE: Today's contribution comes from the Swede that never was: Matt Giordano. Last time we hung out, we were wasted and got delicious fries at like 4 in the morning. Fuck yeah.
ALSO: This is round 2 of our 2007 Loney, Dear coverage. Enjoy round 1.
This (re)release has gone somewhat under the radar, but Loney, Dear's fantastic Sologne finally hit retailers stateside. Seeing as how it's the time of year for sweaters, and about a year since I first saw him/them live (both shows in which I dragged the proprietor of this site to). I was smitten initially with the music, but it took Joey a few months to reach that level. The music is just so pretty, and like an old friend, recalls sweaters, tea and just the overall warm one gets from being around great people as the darkness and cold weather begins to surround us.
I wanted to do something special for the release of Loney, Dear's "Loney, Noir" on Sub Pop. But I got swamped and distracted. So it had to wait until today.
So here you are, enjoy 4 songs, each from the 4 albums Emil Svanängen has produced. They're all really worth tracking down I promise.
My friend had passed me some songs to listen to from the band but I never fully got into it. I enjoyed Emil's contribution to the I'm From Barcelona lp but other than that it wasn't something I was in love with. But then I saw him perform with a full band twice for CMJ last November and was blown away. A really, really great and intimate-yet-upbeat live show.
After the first 2 listens of "Loney, Noir", I definitely thought it wasn't as strong as "Solonge". After the next 324598 listens, I take it back: Loney, Noir is a perfect pop album, with great songs.
Sub Pop is marketing "I Am John" which is the smartest idea ever. It's a really great introduction to Loney, Dear and what the music is all about. It builds and builds until it explodes with "I've got a feeling of you and we danced for so long, I want your arms around me like lovers do, and I'm never gonna let you down, never gonna let you down. "
Here is the video for said song, which is a lot darker then the sunny music behind it.
