Life Coach - Fireball [MP3]

MP3: Life Coach - Fireball

It's always nice to hear from Phil Manley (Trans Am/The Fucking Champs), and this time around he's made a record with his bandmate from Golden - the frequently-misused-but-extremely-talented Jon Theodore. Alphawaves by Life Coach isn't all hits, but when it's working it reaches heights as high as mountains.

FUCK YEAH: Black Pus - 1000 Years [MP3]

MP3: Black Pus - 1000 Years

Seeing as my entire life is music and comics, a dude like Brian Chippendale is a sure thing in my book. His newest Black Pus LP, All My Relations (out March 19th), was recorded in an honest to god recording studio and is also his first release on Thrill Jockey.

Check out "1000 Years", the first listen allowed from this beast. What's it sound like? The comic above will answer all inquires.

Enjoy!

New Wooden Shjips - Lazy Bones

MP3: Wooden Shjips - Lazy Bones

If it seemed like all of the greats were putting out records this year, you're onto something. This September 13th, Wooden Shjips 'drop' a new full length called West (and first recorded in an 'official' studio) on Thrill Jockey, their first for the label.

I don't need to tell you that this, the first released recording from the album and third in sequence, "Lazy Bones" is awesome - it obviously is. I just need to post it, and I just did. Mission accomplished. Fuck yeah.

Your turn, downloader.

FUCK YEAH: Harmonia

MP3: Liturgy - Harmonia

Here is the closing song on the new Liturgy album, and it does a damn fine job in doing so. These fellas have been ruling for the past couple of years and show no signs of breaking that trend. Enjoy.

I was going to call this post "Tuesday Bruiseday" but then I realized it's Wednesday

The Skull Defekts have been at the forefront of the Swedish noise scene the last few years, along with personal favorites Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words. Although the latter has just concluded, The Skull Defekts are still going strong having just released "Peer Amid" on Thrill Jockey. While this is a heavy album, it is by no means suffocating. Instead, "Peer Amid" succeeds in tonal balance and experimenting at times, meaning each member gets their moment to shine while the others are there supporting either rhythmically or texturally. Enjoy.

FUCKA YOU DOFFFIIIIIIIINNN

Mi Ami have, at least on Dolphins, decided to abandon the spastic elements that made their older material a bit more propulsive. This maneuver is interesting because the grittiness of past releases tended to fit the shrieked vocals a bit more than the more straight up dance elements employed here. While it's still better than a lot of the danceable music being offered these days, fans of Mi Ami's driving noise may be a bit disappointed.

Bob Marley

MP3:
Mi Ami - Secrets

Mi Ami have a new record out on Thrill Jockey called "Steal Your Face" and it is filled with six tracks of awesome spastic dub. Put this on the record player and booty-shake you way into springtime, or just when throwing some tastiness onto the grill.

New High Places: "I Was Born"

(via P4K)

I'm on record saying this, but once again: I really did not enjoy High Places when I first heard them. My girlfriend was the one who brought them to my attention and she was beyond on board, but it took quite awhile for it to click on my end. Their self titled full length was what did it for me, and they've been succeeding ever since (like their split with Soft Circle out now on PPM, holy shit is it great).

They released a new video for the new song "I Was Born" that will be on a 12 inch single shortly from Thrill Jockey, then we can expect a full length in 2010. Radical. Check this out, it's awesome and features the debut of the bassoon in their sound. Also a fun fact: they left Brooklyn for LA! Good for them, seriously.

High Places

MP3:
High Places - Golden
MP3: High Places - From Stardust to Sentience

The new eponymous record from High Places is very much worthy of it's self-titling in that it is a fine representation of the group and all of it's strengths. What was merely hinted at on the group's singles collection "03/07 - 09/07" is realized to it's fullest potential; it is two people's musical outlet at it's greatest hour.

You've certainly heard of High Places, probably starting late last year and well into 2008, as they've fit in like a glove at your favourite band's gigs and consumed all of your favourite internet news and mp3 publications. It felt like there was a bit of a label race to snag up this talent (in the shadows of course) and when it was announced that Thrill Jockey had reigned victorious, everybody seemed deserving of their winnings.

All of this, of course, makes for an interesting introduction, but it requires ignoring once you get down to the dirt and actually listen to the band and it's debut long player. They're not exactly reinventing the 'High Places' wheel, as they are that rare band that has found it's sound and embraced it completely, but they have perfected it, erasing any near-impossible flaws that could've been found in the past. It is the perfect pop record in the sense that it only goes 19 seconds over 30 minutes, and the beat never stops. It is ethereal and it is bouncy, it is sweet and it is challenging, all of the things that make it so rewarding to be a fan of this music. While it's less buried treasure than it was when it started, it still sounds personal enough for everyone to hold dear: when you're listening to songs like "Vision's the First..." or "Golden", it is yours. You get the empty room percussion, you get the rarely pitch-shifting vocals and the synths serve to sew it together into a well fitting shirt. It's all yours. High Places have done their part, and now it is our turn to sit back and enjoy it. Be it at a party or a candle lit dinner, this record is the soundtrack to every possible activity in life, and I personally am thankful to have that in any band, it is aces that it comes from these folks. An audible job well done.

"High Places" is out now from Thrill Jockey.

Trans Am

MP3: Trans Am - North East Rising Sun

I've heard bits and pieces of Trans Am before, but the other day I got full on with their "Sex Change" lp. While I'm not completely in love with it, it has some killer moments. "North East Rising Sun" is flawless though. Get in a car, turn this up and drive fast. Get pulled over. It all rules.
