An update regarding the mp3s...

As some of you may know, my server crashed a few months back and I lost all of the mp3 files uploaded on it which were posted in this very blog. I've been doing my best to reload all that was lost (including picture files from the early days) and it hasn't been easy. I don't have all of these files/albums anymore and some I just need to put on my computer again. The deal is, as of this post, ALL mp3s from 2009 are up and hosted, and some others scattered about are up too. The damage, at the end of the day, it that 90-95% of the mp3s will be back up, though some it seems could be lost forever.

Again, if you end up here and you aren't able to download the mp3 you want, email unicorntastic (at) gmail (dot) com and I will get it up asap if I still have (chances are good!).

Portland, Oregon dwellers Hockey have an album coming out in October. I have seen them live twice, and both times was impressed by their disco-heavy show, and the fact that they sound very full. Per request, this is a stream only, but is still a catchy number. Hockey is perfect for your next coke party.

Silk Flowers' self titled record is pretty cool, and has some crazy ideas to boot. Some days it verges on completely odd, but the one song that always captivates me is "In This Place". It sounds like it was recorded in the 17th century during something important. It's a quick burst of atmosphere, but on the record it'll stop you in your tracks and is missed the second it ends. One could state that every song by The Bear Quartet is a classic, and that wouldn't be to far off—especially of late, as three of their recent albums are amongst the definitive of the decade (2001's Ny Våg, 2004's Saturday Night and 2006's Eternity Now). Here is a song from each.

MP3: Soft Circle - Light Bright

The Soft Circle side of the 12 inch vinyl split with High Places is a real revelation. I had caught audible glimpses of them (or him I guess) a couple of times, but what's on here is completely awesome. It's got the right stuff: beats, interesting repetition and killer vocals. A total hit, both jams.

I chose not to post the High Places song, despite being my favourite thing on the split, for 2 reasons: it's too long to just give away and everyone already loves this band. It's totally worth buying though and you get a download code to boot. Pitchfork posted a stream of the High Places track awhile back, which can be found here.

That Major Lazer record that came recently is tight. "Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do" is dance hall reggae hip hop stoner pop music at it's finest. There's so many things going on that just leak from your speaker's pours that it can be overwhelming to really hear it. But it's all there, I swear it. This track is my favourite thus far as it's summer all over, but it's all hits.

It's coming real soon! "Flash Forward to the Good Times" comes out August 18th on Kemado Records, which isn't a surprise because they are the best record label ever. It's going to be great, and I will gladly accept a promotional copy and will buy the vinyl edition for sure.

To tide us over, Kemado subscription off-shoot Mexican Summer released an already sold out single in the form of "Bab'lone Nights b/w You Pick Me Up"; both hits and both appearing on the full length as well. Marmoset may be one of the coolest, greatest bands ever. Seriously, the world has robbed them of the credit and riches deserved to a group who constantly delivers music of the highest caliber. As us fans do before every record, we pray that whatever newest effort they are releasing (the beyond excellent "Tea Tornado" in this case) will be the one that catches on. Fingers crossed this time.

What you have here is 14 songs of smart, wispy rock and roll that is audibly clever on all possible levels and remains confident and carefree for the entire duration. Whereas these days most albums feel like a chore to listen to, "Tea Tornado" is the kind that makes you wish there was more time in the day to play it. Don't miss this one.

New Wavves: Mickey Mouse.

Everybody's favourite whipping boy Wavves canceled a show and posted a demo all at once. "Mickey Mouse" was made available for downloading in .aif form (though converted to mp3 here for your enjoyment) on his Ghost Ramp blog. It's listed as a demo for album 3, and it sounds pretty cool. It will be interesting to hear the end result and will be even more interesting to read the classic comments on Stereogum once this gets posted. Woo hoo!

I have heard the name Japandroids going around for some months now but I never got around to giving them a listen until last week when I was on the Polyvinyl website for some reason. As soon as I heard "Young Hearts Spark Fire" I was hooked. It's like all of those great bands I grew up with, but using the mature, adult mindset I am currently enjoying so much.

So yeah, I pre-ordered the vinyl and got the album download right away and I've been digging it tons. "Post-Nothing" is a lot of fun and sure, there are one or two cheesy songs but I can't play music, so who am I to judge? Maybe they're really cool and I'm missing something. It's not even that big a deal, they don't even suck they're just kinda... whatever. The point is, this album fucking rules. Make it happen.

All I needed to read in the email I received with this mp3 in it was "Thin Lizzy". Sure, the fact that it's coming out on DFA didn't hurt, but I fucking love Thin Lizzy.

Free Energy are pretty rad too, they feel classic in the modern sense and are quite catchy to boot. Their self titled song appears on the 7 inch they've got coming out on the 21st of July (hey that's next week!). "Through The Devil Softly" sees release September 1st through Nettwerk, and I couldn't be more excited. Her last record, 2001's "Bavarian Fruit Bread, is still a very important album for me and it came along at a very influential time in my life. It sounds like she's still got it: the single "Blanchard" is every bit as dreamy and goddamned beautiful as you'd expect, maybe even more so. I can't wait for a whole record of this, seriously.

A band like Black Moth Super Rainbow could easily make the same songs and records over and over again and still be great, but luckily they released "Eating Us", a complete progression to the trademark BMSR sound.

The song that I can't get out of my head or stop listening to is "Gold Splatter": it stops time and fills the space with beautiful music. So far, it's made every day better during the minutes it consumes. No need for helmets as the flight is not bumpy, just float along...

We did this before about a year ago with "Time Fades Away", the out of print live Neil Young record and it got one of the biggest responses I've seen on the blog. I'd been toying with the idea of posting Further's "Grimes Golden" record for awhile now and when I saw Matt a month back, he mentioned that we should do it again and now it's history.

Further are one of the best bands ever, a little bit of fuzz and a lot of heart. I posted about them during Beachwood Sparks week way back when and have tracked down a good number of their records since. Sadly, their catalogue is criminally out of circulation, begging for a label to re-press them all. Until then, we offer you "Grimes Golden", a 9 track masterpiece from 1994. The hit here is obviously "Quiet Riot Grrrl", but the whole lp is indeed as golden as it promotes itself.

The world has been lucky enough to see a BWS reunion, and now the ball falls into Further's court. What do you say fellas? Give us a one night only event to cherish until our dying days? Fingers crossed, and until then, please enjoy this record and seek out whatever else you can from there. Consider this your starting point... good luck.

Health has been mighty good to this blog over the years, getting us a lot of hits/downloads and even thanking us in their remix cd that came out last year. I'm pretty sure we'll always try to be as good to them too forever, and it's not hard when they churn out hit after hit.

The gods has returned with a new single for their greatest song yet, "Die Slow", a salivating taste from their in-progress full length "Get Color", which every blog ever is pre-hyping as the greatest album of all time before even hearing it. I'm going to join them: "Get Color" is light years beyond fantastic and a big breath of fresh air for this year, as 2009 has lacked anything resembling originality. Thank a high fucking power for Health. Shine on, friends.

The B side, a cover of Joe Meek's "I Hear A New World" makes for a flawless piece of wax, adding to the fact that the vinyl itself is bright pink and the sleeve is a sweet cutout. It's been a while since I've gotten an album that I am initially floored by. Perhaps it's the gloom that envelops New York for nine months of the year, but this album fits perfectly with it all. Perhaps, though, it's the album itself—dare I say it...perfect? With Bill Callahan one expects quality, but this record exceeds that highly set bar. Beautifully arranged and calm, with his voice as steady as ever. This is the best album I've heard in the first few months of this year—and it could also be Bill Callahan's best work.

Frequent contributor Matt Giordano pointed out a little while back that it was insane how this blog hasn't posted anything about Loney Dear's newest record "Dear John", which came out this past January. It's true: it's insane. I think that he's our most posted artist (or close to) and we've gushed over this music so many times. We haven't been sitting on it: I know that I've had the vinyl at my home since it's release and am really into it. Let us forgive the mistakes of the past and make nice on internal promises: here it is, at long last, the "Dear John" post.

Every review I've read has pointed out how sad this one is, and yes that's true. Your mood will drop at least 10% when giving this a spin, but hopefully your taste will be sharpened and you will notice how precious this record is. It's Loney Dear's most everything: sad, focus, cohesive and fully realized music. That doesn't matter: it's every bit as exciting and infectous as this was when you first discovered it. Don't give up on this just yet, as is the curse with early year release dates, give it a listen with fresh ears. It'll work wonders.

After an excessively unneeded "Best of" compilation (the three new songs are killer and serve as a segue to this) which took from two albums, Montt Mardié's proper label delivers us his third album. Out on the 9th April via Hybris, Skaizerkite finds Montt bidding adieu to the big band leanings of his first two albums in favor of a more refined, yet still luchly arranged, sound. The pop is turned up a few notches, and if you could call this anything it would be his arena-rock album. I expect the shows in support of this to be equally triumphant and huge.

Golly, I wish I was on top of great music in my high school years, because "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" by the Shangri-Las has all of the instructions of landing a bad ass woman: shades, be tall and be good bad, not evil. Then you can dance close all night long and make her wanna shout "L U V!".

If you dig this (and why wouldn't you), seek out anything by one of the best girl groups of all time.

What the fuck: We haven't done a 'FUCK YEAH' post since October. That is weak, though it isn't my fault as music has been particularly vagina-like for a good bunch of months now. In fact, 2009 hasn't really delivered anything worth jamming hard at all... until now.

Children are the most exciting new band ever. I wanked off about their "Death Tribe" one track lp back in July of last year and had been anticipating anything and everything from them since. Here it is: Kemado delivers "Hard Times Hanging At The End Of The World" on May 12th and we are frothing at the mouth until our hands can grasp it.

In the meantime, "Power Spirit", the first teaser from the lp will be rocked as loud as technology will allow repeatedly until ears bleed and minds burst wide fucking open. It is on.
