I've now found myself a bit ashamed to say that I enjoyed the single "Throwing Shade" when it was released. I enjoyed Skeleton and Reviver, even the amateurish Kid City. Sadly, one track cannot save the new Abe Vigoda album, even if the heights of that "November" reaches prevents the vomit from exiting my mouth for two minutes and fifty-one seconds.

Something happened between last year's great "Reviver" ep and the upcoming "Crush", but the game didn't just evolve, it damn near changed completely. This would be more alarming if Abe Vigoda didn't still sound on point. "Crush", the new sound from Abe Vigoda sees release September 21st on PPM.

Quail Lungs Operation

Stereogum dropped this joint last night and I just gave 'er a listen. I like it! Quail Lungs is pretty DIY Americana which I miss and still holds weight I think. Why did we give up on this so soon? I think Quail Lungs will bring it back. PPM is putting this out and I guess PPM and Quail Lungs are homies since schooling and it's way different from the rest of their catalogue but that's great and awesome and we should support this!

The Dum Dadadum b/w You Can't Believe in Anything 7 inch comes out next month. 500 copies/all radical.

New Best Coast hit: "Wish He Was You"

Best Coast I think is the best new band of 2009. She's keeping summer alive from her lair of endless sunshine and spreading the good news across the land. Check out the new song "Wish He Was You" at her myspace now.

Also, it looks like her upcoming output should keep us busy for awhile: beyond the previously announced 7 inches on Art Fag and Group Tightener, we can expect 2 more from Black Iris and PPM. Stoked.

The concept of White Shit is enough to split your gash in two: the dudes of Big Business get together with dudes I don't know but have to be bad ass if they can hang and make a hardcore record. That record is called "Sculpted Beef" (that's the cover up above) and it's 9 songs, one sided vinyl, out on PPM. This is the opener. This is also the rest of your month. Fuck yeah!

MP3: Silk Flowers - In This Place

Silk Flowers' self titled record is pretty cool, and has some crazy ideas to boot. Some days it verges on completely odd, but the one song that always captivates me is "In This Place". It sounds like it was recorded in the 17th century during something important. It's a quick burst of atmosphere, but on the record it'll stop you in your tracks and is missed the second it ends. Well played Silk Flowers.

MP3: Soft Circle - Light Bright

The Soft Circle side of the 12 inch vinyl split with High Places is a real revelation. I had caught audible glimpses of them (or him I guess) a couple of times, but what's on here is completely awesome. It's got the right stuff: beats, interesting repetition and killer vocals. A total hit, both jams.

I chose not to post the High Places song, despite being my favourite thing on the split, for 2 reasons: it's too long to just give away and everyone already loves this band. It's totally worth buying though and you get a download code to boot. Pitchfork posted a stream of the High Places track awhile back, which can be found here.

This split is out now from PPM. Keep killing it Dean.

It's been a few months since Mika Miko's "We Be XUXA" was released, and luckily it still seems to be enjoyable. I played out the record when I first got it and now it's finding new life again. Sounds like a keeper. Plus, anyone who points out that "I want turkey sandwich" is the catchiest chorus ever to me should be appreciated. Thanks all around.

Reviving with Abe Vigoda.

It's the make over nobody asked for: in less than year's time, Abe Vigoda return with their most defining and rewarding work yet, in an ep titled "Reviver". A strange title and concept, considering this is a band that sounded near fucking perfect on last year's "Skeleton", but when music gets changed up to something this good, there is no reason what so ever to complain.

This ep leaked hard, and it's a testament to this band's popularity when you can do a Google search to download the thing. That's great that they're highly in demand and enjoyed so much, they really deserve it. Abe Vigoda seems to work hard and have a blast in what they do, which is so goddamn rare to find in music these days. I hope that this ep and these dudes set the standard of the year in music and general niceness.

Thanks for the treat guys, we don't deserve it.

Gun Outfit

MP3: Gun Outfit - Your Will

One of my favourite labels, Post Present Medium, released a new 7 inch recently from Gun Outfit, a great band out of Olympia. I've been seeing them compared to Dinosaur Jr. and the Meat Puppets, who are both awesome, but they really are on their own level of unique and clever. The 2 guitarists do well to stand out from one another, and yet compliment the other to lay down the structure of a great song. The 7 inch is 3 gems long and you can find early versions of them and more at the band's website.

It's been nice, having just moved to Lawrence, KS recently and I didn't have the space to pack any records, just my record player. It's caused me to give serious focus on any new vinyl I get, letting me take it in and let me just say that this has been a highlight on the turntable lately. Seriously, this is a band to look out for.

Damn man, I was way bummed when I missed the Abe Vigoda duders at the No Age gig in NYC this past weekend (showed up late). I did pick up their new album that dropped last week, "Skeleton", which if you've been reading the internet you know is the new hype. It's worth the jerking off over folks, 14 infectious songs in like 32 minutes, all hits and all leave you with that kind of punk rock black eye you'd get when you were on punk rock vacation. Or something. Whatever. Jam this, hard.
