Spaceships? Forests?! Holy shit, HOT TRAXXX alumni Niki & the Dove really "get" me. The album comes out in May, I think on the 15th for the USA. I saw them play a few weeks ago and they were beyond terrific, so naturally I'm pretty pumped for this LP.

FUCK NO: Markus Krunegård - Everybody Hurts [VIDEO]

We're nearly four months into the year and I guess we're due for our most beloved column. Unfortunately though, we're having to focus on a man whose music we used to defend. Long-time readers should be familiar with Markus Krunegård's former band Laakso, who Joey and I both adored. A fan since Laakso's debut EP, I cannot tell you how many people I've suggested them to, pass on songs, etc—because I found Laakso to have something more to say, lyrically and musically. Their second album My Gods was one of my favorites of the last decade.

His solo career though, has found him releasing rather emotionless bland pop music. You felt every Laakso record, like you were a part of each song. The music really pushed his typically very good lyrics into a sense of inclusion. Now, he just sings over the music, which has become so secondary he may as well release an a cappella album. I should clarify that it's getting the FUCK NO tag not because it's necessarily bad, but more because I just keep finding myself disappointed. It doesn't add anything—it's just there.

HOT TRAXXX: Loosegoats - Montananas [STREAM]

The mighty Loosegoats have returned after a decade plus absence to give Americana a boost from it's current malaise. With singer Christian Kjellvander becoming on of the most consistent singer-songwriters of the decade though, this is really no surprise. Lush vocals with distorted guitars, a driving beat and a powerful chorus—what's not to love? Enjoy.

The surprising aspect on the first view is the intimacy of the recording. In recent interviews he's mentioned how it was recorded in the front room of his house, and really that adds to the overall sound. And never one one for shying away from an epic ending, he's again achieved that result. I personally cannot wait for the new album. Enjoy.

Holy shit - Cloud Nothings went from a really cool band to something truly special in the blink of an eye! I saw them earlier in the year and it was a hell of time, and goddamn this new album is everything you would want it to be. "Stay Useless" is easily Attack on Memory's centerpiece, a total rock song with Dylan Baldi hitting some chill inducing notes, all masterfully recorded by the great Steve Albini.

It sounds fresh, exciting and most importantly enduring, something that I hope becomes the trend in 2012 - now with the added pressure of the bar being set so high by January's Attack on Memory. Don't miss it.

Longtime readers of the blog may be surprised that it look this long to finally acknowledge these purveyors of aural cud. As easy as they were to ignore the hype marketers began their push, they're statements pertaining to their upcoming record need to be translated, knowing how hard it may be for English speakers to pick out their Afrikaans lyrics. Their statements appear italicized below, with the translation underneath.

So anyway... Interscope offered us a bunch of money again to release our new album TEN$ION.

This is simple: Interscope/UMG paid for the recording of the new album.

But this time, they also tried to get involved with our music, to try and make us sound like everyone else out there at the moment.

Upon hearing the finished product, the executives asked if we could possibly make it listenable. We asked them to explain further. To paraphrase a near half-hour diatribe on what makes something listenable and referring to it as commercial rap's "Lulu" we found ourselves rather taken aback by their lack of faith in our "masterpiece"—they even suggested firing that blonde thing and replacing her with Rihanna. Fools, they are! We're making the music of the future we responded, and they had the gall to retort that the record sounded like a mixture of all of the worst rap songs of 2008.

So we said: 'U know what, rather hang on to your money, buy yourself something nice...we gonna do our own thing. Bye bye'

Mr. Record Executive wrote off the album expense, tore up our contract and even gave us the album. He said "Good luck even trying to give this to the toilet or the rubbish heap".

The long awaited release of the Brian Wilson and Beach Boys masterpiece, SMiLE Sessions. With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has, for the first time, collected and compiled the band's legendary 1966-'67 sessions for the never-completed SMiLE album. Rolling Stone magazine recently called SMiLE "the most famous unfinished album in rock & roll history." 

In several sessions between the summer of 1966 and early 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 album, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.  

SMiLE Sessions physical and digital configurations include an assembled collection of core session tracks, while the box set delves much deeper into the sessions, adding early song drafts, alternate takes, instrumental and vocals-only mixes, and studio chatter. SMiLE Sessions invites the listener into the studio to experience the album's creation, with producer, singer and bassist Brian Wilson's vision leading the way as he guides his fellow Beach Boys, singer Mike Love, drummer Dennis Wilson, lead guitarist Carl Wilson, rhythm guitarist Al Jardine, and newest member Bruce Johnston (who'd replaced Brian Wilson in the touring group during 1965), through the legendary sessions.

 Artwork for all of the SMiLE Sessions physical and digital configurations has been created with and inspired by Beat-Pop artist Frank Holmes' original 1967 LP sleeve art and booklet designs intended for the SMiLE album. With its three-dimensional shadowbox lid, The SMiLE Sessions box set offers a whimsical peek inside the storied "SMiLE Shop."
