There's always a curiosity that is in the air whenever a new Deerhunter song is released for the first time: can they keep it up?
"Monomania", the title track from their May 7th long player, shows that yes they can indeed keep it up. In fact, they sound more erect and reinvigorated than ever before.
It's been a rainy couple of days and when that's the case you usually go running to your old favorites. Here are the 2 Japanese bonus tracks for Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest. I know we keep posting outtakes for that album, but we really are excited for BC's new Atlas Sound album. This is just how we get through the pain of not having a copy of it yet. One day, in 2012, we'll all look back on this post and laugh at it, but not today. Enjoy.
In our wait to the upcoming Atlas Sound record, and whenever Deerhunter decide to drop another banger, here's the b-side from the "Memory Boy" seven inch which came out on Record Store Day earlier this year. Enjoy.
It's been a full year since Jay Reatard's passing and I'm going to let this post be it for today, as we miss the dude a ton. I wrote a quick blurb last year after getting the news which should still be checked out and heard and today I'm posting his split with Deerhunter where they covered each others hits.
His Shattered Records is going to release a final single from him, recorded just 2 days before his passing. It's for club members only and there's still time to join. Do that here.
After Rainwater Cassette Exchange, it felt like the magic spark found in Deerhunter's previous work may have wained a bit. Enter "Revival", a blast of fire from their upcoming long player "Halcyon Digest" (out September 28th) which reignites all kinds of passion from their instruments to your ears. I dig it. Welcome back.
I don't know if it was a fluke that Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. was so great, but I haven't enjoyed anything as much from Deerhunter before or since (other than Atlas Sound's incredible "Logos" lp). This limited cassette was from that brief period of brilliance and is very awesome.
Alright here is how this is going to go, and I'm probably only going to say this once: Every day until we finish, myself and Matt Giordano are counting down the very best albums of the decade. We each have our own awesome fucking lists and sometimes we share a few picks. Either way, both lists are the official stance on the music of this decade. Matt is kicking us off and my post will come later in the afternoon, from there it switches back and forth until our #1, when you get a double fucking punch. K.O.? You fucking know it. Enjoy!
#25 - Deerhunter - Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. Kranky Records 2008
Matt on Microcastle/Weird Era Cont.:
This double-disc opus was the statement the American indie rock scene of the latter part of the decade was looking for. A band unabashed in their approach and attitude, with the country's press completely at the whim of the charismatic Bradford Cox.
Didn't really catch onto the whole Atlas Sound thing because I thought Deerhunter was rubbish. However, I really am digging their new stuff so I decided to give the whole thing a shot. Along comes this, "Amsterdam MIDI", a virtual 7 inch posted on the DH blog which I think is a great idea. It's pretty good, but considering it was a "hotel bedtime recording", there's not much to judge it on. That's fine. I like it.
